Recovery is not always a total absence of mental illness. It can be a combination of managing the mental illness and developing ways to live a satisfying life within the community. (NAMI, 2010)

Recovery is Caused by Many Factors
Social relationships are important components of good mental health. For those people who are recovering from mental illness, reconnecting with society aids recovery and reduces the likelihood of relapses occurring. (NAMI, 2010)
Other important factors in recovery are improvements in medications and the growing acceptance that people with mental illness can be involved in their own care. (Sullivan, 1997)
Subsequent studies showed that even before the advent of modern mental health practices, between half and two thirds of all institutionalized patients diagnosed with schizophrenia had eventually recovered. (Torrey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2006)
Recovery is a process that often has its high points and low points. Symptoms can disappear for a while, and then reoccur. Because of this, the continuing support from family and friends together with allied health professionals will always be an important part of every journey toward recovery. (Rickwood, 2006)
Serious mental illness can mean a loss of social status, loss of income and separation from friends and family. It can take away a person’s ability to function in society.
Experience since then shows that recovery is largely dependent upon the degree to which a person with mental illness is able to participate in society, and upon the attitudes of other people with whom they interact. (Rickwood, 2006)
Harrison, G., Hopper, K., Craig,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], T., et al. (2001). Recovery from psychotic illness: a 15- and 25-year international follow-up study. British Journal of Psychiatry, 178,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 506-517.
Although it may sometimes seem impossible, recovery from mental illness does happen. In fact, most people who have been diagnosed with mental illness experience significant improvement or full recovery. (Rickwood, 2006)

As the focus on recovery has increased, so has the realization that long term institutionalization is undesirable and in most cases unnecessary.
There are many pathways to recovery. These can include the elements of a ‘normal’ life – a home, a job, friends and a stable environment. They can also include the re-establishment of emotional factors such as optimism and hope which are often lost in the individual’s fight against their mental illness.(NAMI,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2010)
Relationships are Part of Mental Health
Social ‘reconnections’ can include things most people take for granted, such as interacting with friends, having a job, enjoying financial stability, and being able to participate in society.
Progress in Mental Health has Been Ongoing
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a study of long term outcomes of people who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in the 1950s showed that more than 60 percent had fully or largely recovered. (Harrison, G., Hopper, K., Craig, T., et al. 2001)
These kinds of activity, in turn, help a person recovering from mental illness to regain a sense of purpose, to feel safe, to experience security, and to rediscover optimism and hope for their future. (Mills & Dombeck, 2005)
Mills, Harry Ph.D & Dombeck, Mark Ph.D Resilience
This fact was not understood nor accepted until near the end of the 20th Century. Up to that time people with mental illness were simply locked away in institutions where their symptoms were treated with little or no focus on recovery. (Sullivan, 1997)
