Given the state of the economy and the sinking job rate across the country many people are, understandably split on a movie about a remorseless, self absorbed character who fires people for a living. The direction was sure footed and the performances were spot on. It was heartbreaking to see a man who really thought he had it all figured out only to have to him reevaluate everything and try to discover his new purpose… but hey, that’s why people go the movies right?

Enjoyment of this brilliantly crafted fantasy film is directly proportional to the ability to recall the joys and aching pains of being eight years old. This movie, while not really a great adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book is a moving, risk taking, wonderful homage to childhood.

Try and watch the first 15 minutes of this beautiful and elegant animated Pixar masterpiece without bawling like a baby. The story is simple: an aging balloon seller refuses to go into a home for old folks so he ties a bazillion balloons to his house and floats away… problems arise when an over zealous boy scout accidentally tags along. One of the best buddy-buddy movies to com along in recent years. Another Brilliant movie from the people who know how to do it right.

David Gibbon’s/Alan Moore’s perfect and, once thought, un-filmmable comic book (graphic novel) comes to life vibrantly in this wholly realized and extremely reverential on-screen adaptation. Watchmen is a gritty [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dark [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], adult, uncompromising and beautiful anti-super hero epic that was tragically overlooked. If you haven’t see it you should.
5. Watchmen (USA 2009, dir. Zack Snyder).
Not only is this extremely tense verte style action film Bigelow’s finest work since her seminal 1987 masterpiece Near Dark… this is also the best film of they year. The performances are amazing and the film making is bold and assured. The Hurt Locker is breathtaking!
Tarantino’s best film since Pulp Fiction is surprisingly restrained. Basterds shows a maturity from one of films living legends. The homage is a subtler than recent efforts and the fact that the film is spoken in German, French, Italian as well as English, gives it the cross continental feel Kill Bill sadly lacked.
8. District 9 (USA/South Africa, 2009 dir. Neil Blomkamp)
Sure Avatar is Dances with Wolves meets Ferngully but one would have to be pretty cynical not to appreciate the groundbreaking force at which this film comes alive on the screen. Cinema hasn't felt a pulse this strong in the movie theaters since Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark!
