A unique sort of lead-meets-rhythm guitar sound that fills each track with layer upon layer of details to be discovered upon repeat listens, as in the hypnotic buzz-sawing riffs driving the glam-rock classic "The Drowners", the lonely, teardrop-like notes that haunt "Sleeping Pills", and the ethereal leads and chords guiding the absolutely gorgeous "She's Not Dead".
It may not have the sheer lyrical and thematic depth of it's masterful gothic 1994 follow-up Dog Man Star, but nowhere in Suede's catalogue are the words more perfectly balanced with and against the music (which [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while polished to a fine sheen, never sacrifices mood, tension [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and atmosphere for surface appeal) than on their trend-setting (and Mercury Prize winning) 1993 self-titled debut.
Brett Anderson's Moving Lyrics
Suede A Great Introduction To A Singular Band
A tough trick to pull off without coming across as scatter-shot and schizophrenic, but one which Suede confidently achieve as it travels at ease within the David Bowie and Smiths-influenced glam-rock sound that most assuredly is the talented band's bread and butter. The result of which is a sort of enticing and immensely seductive musical journey through equal-parts tragic and romantic tales of modern (or post-modern) unease.
Lush and affecting tales of sexual depravity, as on the stomping single "Animal Nitrate", lovers committing suicide on the sweeping, haunting, and graceful "She's Not Dead", modern-day suburban emotional detachment and loneliness on "Sleeping Pills", all the way to making peace with a departed loved one on the heartbreaking yet hopeful album closer "The Next Life".
An awkward and bottled-up emotional disarray that finds itself sublimely balanced against the rest of the band's aural pyrotechnics. Something nowhere more present and affecting than on the brooding "Pantomime Horse", where Brett's late-night dread steeped vocals work in tandem with Mat Osman's propulsive bass, Simon Gilbert's insistent drumming and, above all else, bernard Butler's alternately moody, distant and climactic and erupting riffs.
All of which, while admittedly not finding Brett Anderson at the peak of his powers as a vocalist (a power that would go on to grow more mature and full-bodied with time like a fine wine), showcase an oddly appropriate awkwardness in his trademark soaring croon that perfectly captures the bottled-up emotional disarray at the heart of each of the album's songs.
An absolutely gorgeous, graceful, and confident song amongst an album-full of them. One which finds an up-and-coming band full o

Bernard Butler's And The Band's Focused Musicianship
An album which, as is tradition for self-titled releases, sets out to introduce (or re-introduce and reinvent) the band to the masses. The best albums of which (like The Beatles' unparalleled White Album or [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more recently, Pearl Jam's invigorating 2006 release) are filled to the brim with an urgent sense of purpose and a clinical and precise focus.
Something which Suede by Suede has in spades, and then some, as each of it's eleven tracks (across an approximately forty-three minute running time) finds the band (rounded out by vocalist Brett Anderson, guitarist Bernard Butler, bassist Mat Osman, and drummer Simon Gilbert) making the most of every single second of running time as it shifts from one side of it's collective personality to another with each successive track.
