When The Shawshank Redemption was released in 1994 in cinemas it was a flop [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grossing 18 million dollars from a budget of 35. It was well received by critics but many attributed its failure to its poor marketing. The tagline: “Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free” coupled with a poster of a man standing in the rain left many bewildered as to what the film was actually about. Despite this it was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1994, but was overshadowed by Forrest Gump - which meant it did not win a single one. However, it was on the small screen that The Shawshank Redemption really came into its own as a true gem with a magnificent cast and flawless direction.

Based upon Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, a short story by Stephen King, The Shawshank Redemption follows the story of a convict named Andy Dufresne who spends two decades of his life within the walls of Shawshank Prison. The film is a prison drama directed by Frank Darabont, and stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
On the outside Andy was an up and coming banker and on the inside it is eventually revealed that he knows the ins and outs of finances. He starts off by doing taxes for the some of the guards [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then later all [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before becoming a financial advisor for almost every prison guard across the state.
The Warden’s comfortable life is put in jeopardy when evidence comes to light which might prove Andy’s innocence allowing the Warden’s favourite pet to get out of prison, and prevent him cleaning the Warden’s money.
In 1947 Andy Dufresne (Robbins) is convicted of the first degree murder of his wife and her lover, he is sentenced to serve two life sentences back to back in Shawshank Prison. For a time he barely speaks, but finally befriends fellow inmate Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding (Freeman), a man who has recently been declined parole after serving twenty years of a life sentence.
Shawshank’s Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton) begins to rake in the rewards of having a man in his prison who can take dirty money and make it clean. The money rolls in as Andy keeps the books, and the Warden begins to look forward to his retirement knowing that by the time he does Andy will have made him into a millionaire.
