In an apparently open and shut case, the trial was not expected to last for longer than a day or two but it stretched into five as Smith changed his plea saying that his confession had been made under duress. Because of his mental state, he was several times admitted to hospital.
In 1919 Eric returned to London, working in the Foreign Office and whilst there, he met a widow, Ellen Douglas Scott Niven. At the age of 35, he married. Thereafter, he was appointed to the post of Chinese Secretary, serving in Asia from 1922 to his retirement in 1936. He continued however, as advisor to the British embassy at Chunking. For his services he was knighted.
Eric Teichman's Life
During his time in Asia, Eric travelled widely and wrote several books that were to become standard reading for anyone interested in the area. In 1921,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Travels of a Consular Officer in North West China was published and a year later, Travels of a Consular Officer in Eastern Tibet. After his retirement, two other volumes appeared: Journey to Turkestan (1937) and Affair of China (1938).

The Trial
The Murder of Eric Teichman
An appeal was launched and among those asking
Erik Teichmann was born in Eltham in Kent in January 1884, the youngest of six children. His father Emil had migrated to England from what was then Prussia and set up in business as a merchant at Chislehurst in Kent. His mother's father traded in furs.
The Berkshire Evening Eagle of Massachusetts, reported that the psychiatrist called upon to give evidence stated that Smith was a morally defective homicdal degenerate. Major Leo Alexander declared the accused to have a mental age of nine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while the defence council, Lt Max H Sokarl from Connecticut said that Smith suffered from a split personality. A plea of insanity was entered but rejected and Smith was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. The Reno Evening Gazette of Nevada reported that Smith swayed as the sentence was read out but recovered his composure.
On the afternoon of Sunday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], December 3rd 1944, Eric Teichman was relaxing at home on his three thousand acre estate of Honingham Hall in Norfolk. Somewhere outside he heard the sound of gun shots. According to his wife, they had recently been plagued by unauthorised shooters and probably in a fit of pique, Sir Eric went to investigate. It was the last time that Lady Ellen saw him alive.
When he did not return a search party was sent to investigate. It was on a second sortie that he was finally discovered in what appeared to be a crouching position behind a tree. He had been shot through the face. At the scene were about ten cartridge cases and some chewing gum.
On coming of age, in 1906 Teichman anglicized his forename. Having attended Charterhouse School then Gonville and Caius College Cambridge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he embarked first on a lengthy tour of Russia followed by an appointment as an assistant Chinese interpreter in Peking, later being promoted to assistant Chinese Secretary. His particular area of expertise became the Chinese/Tibetan border. Eric's father, Emil, had been an avid diary keeper which may well have prompted his son to record details of his experiences.
The bullet was identified as having come from a carbine routinely used by the American military. As an American base was nearbly, an investigation followed and Private George Smith from Pittsburgh, confessed to the shooting. With him had been Pte Leonard Wojtacha from Detroit. Smith was charged with the murder and Wojtacha with being an accessory.
