Australia banned all forms of cigarette ads in the 1970s, and the introduction of plain packaging is considered the next step in eliminating one of the last remaining mediums used by cigarette makers to promote their product.[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
According to SEATCA, the Philippines has only been “partially” compliant of FCTC guidelines on cigarette advertising and packaging, particularly on the use of graphic picture warnings whose supposed shock value is considered an added deterrent to smoking. The Philippines banned cigarette advertising on TV, radio and print media in June 2008, but tobacco fighters remained unsatisfied since ads were still allowed at the point of sale (actual stores), from sari-sari retail outlets to the duty free shop at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Tobacco companies also continue to benefit from indirect forms of advertising when they sponsor concerts, parties and sporting events,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they said. As to graphic health warnings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], advocates continue to fight for every inch, literally. The FCTC maintains that such disturbing photos should be visible on a space covering at least 50 percent of the cigarette pack.[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Fueled by state tax incentives, seven MetroWest life science companies are serving as what Gov. Deval Patrick sees as the engine for creating jobs and forging a strong economy.
With $2.6 million in tax incentives through a program sponsored by the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, the companies are vowing to create 131 jobs in 2011. Receiving the incentives are Framingham's Boston Heart Lab Inc. and Interlace Medical Inc., along with Sunovion Inc. in Marlborough, Wellesley's NormOxys Inc., Still Rivers Systems Inc. in Littleton, Hopkinton's Caliper Life Sciences Inc. and Valeritas Inc. in Shrewsbury.
The center said yesterday that the incentives will create 36 jobs at Boston Heart Lab, 35 at Sunovion, 18 at Valeritas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 11 at both Caliper Life Sciences and Still Rivers Systems,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and 10 at both Interlace Medical and NormOxys. "The life sciences initiative is all about jobs and better health," Patrick said recently. "These incentives help us build a stronger foundation for our economy and for healing for years to come."[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
