“New York is facing exacting budgetary challenges, but a default to fund smoking cessation program would be pound-foolish and cost the state too much. New York’s leaders should remember that smoking cessation program is a wise investment which saves not only money but lives by decreasing smoking-related health costs,” stated Matthew L. Myers, President of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Smoking kills more than 25,000 lives and costs New York State $8.2 billion in health care annually. New York raised its tobacco funding this year by $3.2 million.
Nevertheless,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is still falling through of the $85.5 million the state provided in 2008 and nothing is allocated to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) request of $254.3 million. Only Alaska and North Dakota realized the CDC’s required level. Also New York increased the state cigarette tax to $4.35 a package this year, being a part of its anti-smoking campaign. “New York has the highest excise duties in the nation and continues to make the first move in implementing effective smoking control programs.
We are proud that we have such an opportunity to create a smoke-free city for all New York residents and visitors,” declared Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], representative of the American Heart Association. “Starting from smoke-free parks and beaches to raising productive methods, the City of New York continues to have a huge potential in improving public health by decreasing the number the main cause of preventable death, and namely smoking,” Steinbaum stated. “New York has achieved many objectives in the fight against tobacco.
But all these achievements could stop and even change if the state leaders rise funding for smoking cessation programs,” stated Myers. “The current system still under-serves those smokers who are trying to quick the dangerous habit and could make more in order to deprive our young generation from lightning up their first cigarette,” Steinbaum concluded. The remarkable crossover is a victory for public health campaigns aimed at stamping out cigarette smoking among teens.
But the federal office that tracks illicit drug use said it was driven by an uptick in youth marijuana use that is broad-based and likely to continue, with even eighth-graders reporting softer attitudes about the risk of smoking pot. After nearly a decade in decline, marijuana is making a strong comeback among teens, with more high school seniors reporting that they had recently smoked pot than cigarettes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to a government survey issued Tuesday.
This year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 21.4% of high school seniors said they had used marijuana in the last 30 days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while 19.2% reported smoking cigarettes in the same time period,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to the annual “Monitoring the Future” survey from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It was the first time since 1981 that pot surpassed tobacco in that age group. The Obama administration’s drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, blamed state medical marijuana measures like California’s Proposition 19 for making pot seem less dangerous to younger Americans.
