dragon, the symbol of China, is the most divine animal in Chinese culture, people say. Not exactly so! Though a popular design in Miao silver earrings and silver necklaces, the dragon is not as divine as it is for other Chinese.
Actually, dragon is the enemy of Miao people. A famous Chinese legend says that the ancestor of Miao, Chi You, fought against dragons dispatched by the Yellow Emperor. The Yellow Emperor was the one who united central China and is considered the father of the Chinese nation. Chi You lost the battle as well as his life, and the Miao tribe was displaced.
So for the Miao people, dragon is vicious and not to be trusted, or at least some are. So sometimes it’s difficult to find Miao silver earrings that look like dragons.
Another Miao legend has it that a vicious dragon lives in its palace down in a river. One day an old man and his grandson went fishing in the river.
Catching the grandfather off guard, the dragon ate the little boy. The old man, consumed by rage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fought the dragon for days until he finally killed it and burned its palace. When night came, the dragon appeared in the dream of the old man and made its apology.
The dragon apologized, and that is probably why dragon can still be good sometimes in the eyes of the Miao.
Today, for Miao people the dragon is no different from the birds, fish, or horses also found on all kinds of Miao silver necklaces and silver earrings. And they even make dragons on their silver jewelry that look somewhat like snakes, bulls, horses, or even pangolins. Interesting!
Silver Necklaces: Lock-Up Design
Another popular earring design, for example, is a lock. A fine hoop holds a small lock, and some nice-looking braids dangle from the bottom. When a Miao girl wears such a pair of silver earrings, it means she has already found her Prince Charming.
This symbol derives from a beautiful Miao legend.
A long time ago there was a Miao girl named Ah Se. Ah Se was known for her beauty and bravery.
One day, there came a monstrous dragon. It bit, killed, and breathed fire,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! The fate of the village hung in the balance. Someone would have to do something!
Fearless, Ah Se decided to confront the dragon face to face. Yet just a girl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she was no match for the massive monster. And she almost got herself killed.
That was when a young man came to her rescue. He was the son of the Sun God. Tall, handsome, and above all, he had divine power. Together they fought the dragon for three days and finally killed it.
The village was saved! And our two young people? They fell in love with each other. As the son of the Sun God left for his palace in the heaven, he gave her a pair of silver earrings designed like a lock, hoping that nothing would separate him and his lover. In return, Ah Se also gave the young man a silver necklace with a lock on it, representing that they would be bonded together forever.
