Premiere Dates Include:American Dad (Starts Oct. 3rd)Glee (Starts Sept. 21st)The Simpsons & Family Guy (Starts Sept. 26th)House (Starts Sept. 20th)Other Shows (Complete List from ChannelCanada.com)Record Amount of Canadian Content... Well, Not Really
A look at the actual Fall TV grid for the main Global Television network reveals that the number of actual hours dedicated to Canadian content between 6 PM and midnight still just barely hovers above the 50% mark, just like always. In other words, those who are hoping for an increase in homegrown TV shows, as soon as autumn arrives, shouldn’t get too excited. It won’t happen.
What Global is doing is similar to someone going to the grocery store and deciding not to buy a 2 litre carton of milk [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like he would normally, but rather four 500 ml cartons instead. To add insult to injury, when he comes home, he announces that he purchased a record number of milk products. Imagine the look of sarcasm on his wife’s face.
Many other favourites are back as well, including House, The Simpsons and Survivor. But there will be new shows too like the remake of Hawaii Five-O and a new Canadian drama called Shattered, which is the story of a homicide detective who also happens to suffer from a multiple personality disorder. Plus, there are more Canadian shows to come from Global. Although just how much more can be subject to interpretation.
Overall, there’s still plenty to enjoy on Global come September, in spite of the flip-flop over Canadian content. However, for those who are looking for interesting stories about our homeland, well apparently they have some pretty good stuff on cable. Or better yet, stick with the CBC.
CanWest sent out a press release letting everybody know that they are, as they put it, producing a record number of scripted original projects for both Global and Showcase. They are producing seven original one-hour dramas [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], four half-hour comedies and three back-door pilots and they say that these shows are set to premiere throughout the 2010/11 broadcast season.
Sounds good in theory, but somewhat misleading. Unfortunately, when they say throughout the 2010/11 season, they really mean throughout. The shows they list consist almost entirely of either mid-season replacements or stand-alone episodes. Shattered and Lost Girl are the only two exceptions.
50% CanCon hasn’t changed
Not to mention, that they are also counting Showcase content, which is in itself also deceptive. After all, that specialty channel was really a separate company from CanWest Global, not all that long ago.

Got Showcase?
The main highlight of the new fall line-up on Global could be the return of Glee which, needless to say, turned out to be a huge hit last season. Aside from that, there’s American Dad, which isn’t as big, but its season premiere is still noteworthy nonetheless simply because it happens to be their 100th episode. Of course, that also means one could expect to see daily reruns somewhere on the dial in the near future.
