The term self-subjugation refers to when a human willingly makes themselves the subordinate and subject to distinct in a arrange of ego enslavement. Using this definition, it can be said that Helena makes herself slave to the unwilling Demetrius because she has a fundamental need to be coerced due to her masochistic feelings about love. These emotions can be linked to her knowing of her own identity and sex.
William Shakespeares activity A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a study of the numerous aspects of love. It covers a range of sentiment from phantasmal, platonic, and parental love; however, the most interesting aspect is that of the type of love demonstrated by the characters Helena and Demetrius.
Use me but as thy spaniel, spurn me, buffet me,

With this statement, Helenas obsessive devotion is presented as something good. Her devotion, however, is testify of her masochistic opinion towards love. The fact that Lysander says that she dotes in idolatry pushes her devotion to the class of self-subjection resulting in her masochism.
Identifying Helena

These lines reflect Helenas faith that she is a being fewer than Demetrius and echoes her desire to subjugate herself for of these beliefs. With masochistic devotion, Helena sets ahead in chasing Demetrius via the forest as he follows Hermias flight.
Role Reversal
