Temat postu: Jordan 6 Ned Kelly, Australia's Armored Outlaw
Just as Jesse James was loved and sheltered by a network of friends and kinfolk in Missouri, Ned Kelly was regarded with esteem in New South Wales, Australia, during the same time period (1870s). Numerous bandits who hailed from downtrodden families and circumstances, on different continents, enjoyed the same respect.
One thing that set Kelly apart from other outlaws was his inventiveness. With Joe Byrne, one of his pals in crime,

Ned Kelly the Hero
It was at this juncture that the Kelly Gang’s suits of armor became celebrated entries in the annals of crime. Amid a hail of gunfire, they stepped from the h
An alternate version of that encounter places young Dan in the fray with the policeman while Ned was absent from the homestead. Regardless, the upshot was that the boys’ mother Ellen was arrested and sentenced to three years at hard labor.
Survival was severely difficult on the frontier. Several of the Kelly children as teenagers began to clash with the law. Ned served time for such offenses as horse theft (which he always denied) and assault.
After each episode, authorities raised the bounty on members of the Kelly Gang. By 1880 it was £2,000 each. They constantly sought out Kelly intimates who might be tempted to inform and reveal the gang’s whereabouts.
No one emerged until Aaron Sherritt,

, an old friend of Joe Byrne, took the bait. When they learned of his treachery in June 1880, the gang killed him and made for the Glenrowan community, not far from the Kellys’ home place.
Kelly Becomes a Bushranger
Ned and Dan were joined by two friends, Joe Byrne and Steve Hart. They proceeded to hide in the bush, elude concerted attempts at capture, occasionally rob banks and find themselves in bloody altercations with evermore infuriated authorities.
A local school teacher in the group escaped and warned the approaching police contingent of the railway destruction. Several dozen police arrived and surrounded the hotel, setting the stage for one of the most horrendous shoot-outs in bush history.
Kelly and his men devised a fantastic plan to thwart their pursuers. They learned a police train was embarking to Glenrowan. Arriving in advance,

, they tore up a stretch of rails, hoping to eliminate their antagonists en masse. Then they withdrew to the Glenrowan Hotel. There they waited in company with a curious assemblage of sympathizers and “hostages.”
Glenrowan: Last Refuge of the Armored Kelly Gang
John Kelly, father of Ned and his siblings, was a “transport.” He’d been expelled from Belfast, Ireland,

, to a Tasmanian penal colony, reputedly on a conviction of stealing pigs for food. He fled and started a family in New South Wales, where Ned was born in 1854.
Many of the settler families in New South Wales were related by blood or marriage. Many of them were averse to the police, who frequently misused their powers in the backward bush territory.
How Kelly became an outlawed bushranger is explained in varying accounts. According to one, a constable came to his family’s crude rural cabin and accused him of livestock theft. In a scuffle, the officer suffered a minor injury and found himself at the mercy of Kelly—who chose to let him go. The policeman returned the goodwill by alleging Kelly had tried to kill him, which sent Ned and his younger brother Dan on the run for the rest of their lives.
