Of course, the series creators and writers have let audiences see these characters as real and vulnerable many times in the past, but seeing them handle life in the wake of wedding bands, sippy cups, and hormones is a refreshing reminder that life doesn’t end at the alter; that often times, that’s just the beginning.
In general [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sequel to the smash hit Sex and the City: The Movie (2008) reads like, well, a typical sequel. There’s nothing particularly interesting about the plot, and certain plotlines from the first movie are recycled for the second. None of Carrie’s friends really grow or evolve throughout the film as they did on the show, and more so than ever, the significant others (Big, Steve, and Harry) are pushed aside while we watch the girls frolic around the world in designer shoes. Also, the gay best friends, Stanford and Anthony, sneak into the film with a very loud, flamboyant wedding (officiated by none other than Liza Minnelli).
Typically, Hollywood tends to follow a traditional plot line for their leading ladies: as the movie’s end approaches, the heroine marries the man of her dreams and lives happily ever after. Game over. Fans of the hit HBO series Sex and the City, an extremely modern take on the lives of successful single women, were no doubt surprised by the ending of the first movie. Our favorite single gal and modern-day princess, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) marries her on-again off-again boyfriend John--aka Mr. Big (Chris Noth) -- and, presumably lives happily ever after.
After seven years of failed romances, career successes and gallivanting with the girls on television, the marriage did provide a certain closure to the reoccurring question, “will Carrie and Big just work it out already?” Yet, the feeling that Carrie’s story no longer needs to continue just because she’s married was ever-present in the film and has been since. Fortunately, Carrie and the gang found it necessary to move beyond the “happily ever after,” reaffirming to women everywhere that just because you’re married doesn’t mean your life is over.
Sex and the City 2 - A Typical Sequel
Nevertheless, the sequel takes a positive (and necessary) look at what life throws at a New York woman after she’s made it down the aisle. As Carrie tries to balance commitment and independence and comfort and romance, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for the very first time [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], allows herself to admit the pressures of motherhood without finishing every sentence with “but the rewards of motherhood make it all worthwhile.” Meanwhile, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), after losing her job, enjoys spending more time with her family, but allows herself to truly miss life in the working world. And Samantha (Kim Catrall), as expected, still keeps the romance light and the sex constant, but does so in the wake of a major sexual speed bump: menopause.
