Opponents say Negative Confession, Airing Dirty Laundry Counterproductive
The difference between Celebrate Recovery and secular 12-step programs is its reliance on biblical principals. One of these (step one) deals with recovering individuals' struggle with addictive or compulsive behaviors. At a March 2009 weekly meeting in Topeka,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kan., participants discussed its benefits.

Arguments against 12-step recovery include what many Christians call a “negative confession.” Naming and claiming a problem only perpetuates it, they say. Instead, they believe Christians should assert that, “I am a new creature in Christ. Old things are passed away, all things have become new.” (II Corinthians 5:17). True, say proponents of recovery programs, but they believe that failure to admit a problem is a form of denial and denial does not lead to victorious living.
Arguments for and Against 12-Step Recovery
Everybody Struggles With Something
Participants of a Christian 12-step recovery program say sharing their needs with others brings healing. They say everybody struggles with something and getting things out in the open causes problems to lose their power. Opponents of the process prefer to keep things to themselves and shun admission of problems, claiming this goes against the biblical principal that regeneration strips Christians of their past.
“Everybody struggles with something,” said a man who asked to be called "George." He added, “I struggle with an addiction to myself.” He shares this sentiment with the apostle Paul when he discusses this problem in the 7th chapter of the book of Romans.

Identified issues and struggles range from anger, alcoholism, anxiety, bulimia, codependency and depression to overeating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pornography, post-abortion syndrome, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), self-harm and sexual addiction. John Baker, founder of the program at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church in southern California calls these life issues "hurts, habits and hangups."
“For what I am doing, I do not understand,” the Apostle Paul said in Romans 7:15. “For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.” Paul sums up the matter by thanking God (verse 25) that, “with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.”
Anyone who visits an international Christian 12-step recovery program called Celebrate Recovery may hear participants identify themselves by first name, followed by the mention of their personal struggle. Celebrate Recovery leadership and small group attendees often identify themselves by their first name and as “a grateful believer in Jesus Christ who struggles with…” and from that point on,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are no secrets.
“Gathering together to be transparent and walk in the spirit in a safe and confidential environment creates an environment of healing," said "Alan." He added, “Getting (issues) out in the open is good because God heals in the light and (habits, hurts and hang-ups) do not get healed in the dark.”
Besides not wanting to make negative confessions, people who say they do not need 12-step recovery groups may be uncomfortable with telling others about their problems. They argue that not everyone needs to know about the issues that they are dealing with. Some believe that these issue should be between the individual and a spouse, immediate family and/or a divine entity.
