The word “agnostic” is made up of two parts – "a" meaning “without” and "gnostic" meaning “knowledge.” According to the New World Encyclopedia, Huxley commented in his essay “Agnosticism” that “the one thing in which most of these good people were agreed was the one thing in which I differed from them. Though agnosticism – a questioning of metaphysical claims of the existence of God – has existed throughout human history, the term itself has not. Thomas Huxley came up with the label in the late 19th century. Huxley was known as “Darwin’s bulldog” because he supported Darwin’s theory of evolution, a theory that proved to be extremely damaging to traditional religious belief founded on literal interpretations of scripture.
