What the Movie was Really About
Dominic Cobb (Leonardo Di Caprio) is an Architect specialized in designing and building dreams. He is also an “extractor”, someone who can enter your dreams while you are asleep, and steal your most precious secrets buried deep within your subconscious. He is accused of being responsible of his wife’s death (played Marion Cotillard), and has been living outside US soil to avoid being apprehended, leaving his two children behind.
We later learn that Cobb escapes the real world to be with her in his dreams – revisiting key points in his memory to be with her (she is not real, so it is his projection of her – a fact that takes him a while to accept). It is revealed that prior to her death they both spent years in a limbo dream world together (years in limbo would equals hours in reality). Upon awakening [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mal still believed that they were still in Limbo, and committed suicide to return to that reality.
The Tipping Point - The Emergence of a Secondary Plot
Christopher Nolan’s Inception was released on the 16th of July [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2010 in the US and the UK, and has been reported to make a total worldwide gross of $364,813,741 (at the time of writing this article). It is categorized by the BoxOfficeMojo website as a mindbender movie – but what was it really about?
Although her character is dead, we are introduced to Cobb’s wife, Mal [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the opening dream sequence. Cobb’s projection of her haunts his dreams, interrupting and sabotaging any extraction mission they go on – leading the audience to question whose dream are they actually witnessing (the target’s or the extractor’s).
What Viewers Initially Thought the Movie was About
There have been numerous online debates on whether Cobb’s so-called reality was also a dream – leading many to conclude that the audience has been watching Cobb’s limbo all along. Although this was never explicitly revealed in the movie, Nolan left the viewer subtle hints along the way that could very well argue for both cases.
Cobb and his partner Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) are offered a job by corporate mogul Saito (Ken Watanabe) after failing to extract valuable information from his dream. The mission is to plant an idea in Robert Fischer’s head (Cillian Murphy), son of Saito’s terminally ill corporate rival Maurice Fischer (Pete Postlethwaite), to break up his father’s empire.
