In late 2010 in Hollywood there are dozens of movies, based on comic books [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in production, post-production, pre-production or simply green lit. And after looking at the 2010 box office receipts, there are some seriously nervous executives at the companies where those films are being made.
So it isn't that comic book movies or movies inspired by or similar to comic stories aren't popular. That is clearly not the case. What is the case is that several movies based on comics didn't do well this year for a variety of reasons.
But the movie changed all that. Instead of making a straight western, the filmmakers decided since Hex was a comic book character, they needed to stylize the film and give Jonah powers. The result was a mess of a film where Jonah Hex seems to be pigeon holed into a film that has nothing to do with the source material. The critics and comic fans hated it, and film goers stayed away because even the trailers failed to make it look good.
Iron Man 2 hits big
But I think that's going a bit too far. If you look at successful comic book movies, the ones that really blow up the box office are ones with strong name recognition. Films with Batman, Iron Man, X-Men, Spider-Man and Fantastic Four get the attention of the general public no matter how good or how bad they are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], simply because people recognized the names from comics or from cartoons or toys. There are exceptions, of course. Sin City and 300 were both big hits, but many movie goers went to those films not even realizing they were bas

Lack of brand recognition
Take Jonah Hex for example. The film is based on the DC Comics western anti-hero who first debuted in the 1970s. In the comics, Jonah Hex is a sharp-shooting bounty hunter who has been hideously deformed in a punishment ritual carried out by a Native American tribe. He's a Clint Eastwood like spaghetti western cowboy.
One of the biggest films of 2010 was Iron Man 2. By October it ranks as the sixth highest grossing film at the box office bringing in $621,751, 988. And that doesn't include the money made of licensing and home video sales. It's also worth pointing out the Clash of the Titans remake came in seventh and while not technically a comic book movie, it certainly has all the trappings of one. The original film is a cult favourite among comic and sci-fi fans. And I will also add that in ninth place is Despicable Me, a cartoon about a comic book type mad scientist villain.
The other two comic book films that critics point to has having failed to connect with the public in 2010 are Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Both films were highly anticipated by comic fans and were liked by critics, but failed to connect with the average movie goer. More so than Jonah Hex, these two films are held up as examples of the death of the comic book movie.
And for good reason. The typical comic book movie costs hundreds of millions of dollars to produce and tens of millions to market. For several years it seemed like the road to box office gold was paved with comic book movies. That was until 2010 when the bottom seemed to drop out of the market and had many in the media declaring that comic book movies were on their way out.
But the future for comic book-based movies isn't as pessimistic as some would suggest. The facts suggest that before you can write off movies based on comic book properties you have to do a little research [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], keep things in perspective and look at the movies that made and lost money.
