A problem also stems from the fact that back stories are usually at least generally established in the originals, making revisiting them in a prequel redundant. The Underworld series is a particularly obvious offender of this. Despite the fact that Underworld: Evolution devoted half of it's story to flashbacks detailing how the war between the vampires and lycans started, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans spent it's entire run time retelling that back story yet again. And other times, as in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it ends up being better to leave the characters origins shrouded in a little mystery.
So why start over when the public is already familiar with the existing franchise? There are a couple reasons to look at this as an option. In the case of the Bourne prequel, it will still be sometime before Damon is available to film another sequel. So releasing a prequel during the downtime with another (and cheaper) actor is a great way to keep the franchise in the public eye until they are able to make another sequel. And like sequels, prequels are easy to market and cash in on. Disney has proven particularly adept in this regard, with it's numerous straight-to-DVD prequels to it's animated classics. And George Lucas' Star Wars prequels hit it big at the box office,Jordan 6 Rings, building off of the popularity of the original trilogy.
It is first important to understand why starting a franchise over with a prequel/reboot is such an appealing strategy to producers. While the approach between the two are different, both reboots and prequels essentially go back to the beginning of a franchises story. A prequel works toward the already established work,Air Jordan 7, while the reboot is a complete retelling that can follow it's own narrative. Both are built on audience's familiarity with the already existing franchise.
Reboots have their own appeal. After so many sequels, a franchise tends to run out of ideas. Or, in the case of older franchises, the changing cultural landscape makes a updated reboot of a series a better choice than continuing on with the original narrative. It's a way to retell a popular story with modern sensibilities, and to get a new,Jordan 6, younger audience on board.

Early in February, Matt Damon told Empire in an interview that the next movie in the Bourne film franchise would most likely be a prequel, with a new, younger actor stepping into Damon's shoes. This follows the much hyped news that came out the end of January, that instead of a fourth Spider-man movie Sony would be rebooting the franchise. This should hardly come as a shock, as the past decade saw a surge in the number of prequels and reboots that Hollywood pumped out. But while it may not be surprising, it is a bit concerning that producers are returning to fewer and fewer wells to tell the audience stories. The claim that Hollywood "is out of new ideas" has been thrown around for years,Jordan Comfort Max 11, but this trend comes the closest to proving that claim right.
Why Start Over?
The problem with the prequel/reboot, is of course that the audience already know where the story is headed. Prequels are at a greater disadvantage than reboots in this regard, since by it's nature it has to end where the original film begins. This creates a sense of pre-ordained destiny that makes it hard to build tension. In the case of the Star Wars prequels, fans already knew the major plot points, such as Anakin turning to the dark side, and which characters would live or die based on what they know from the original trilogy. It's hard to build up suspense when Obi-wan Kenobi is in a life or death situation, since the audience knows he survives because of his involvement in the original.
