The visuals are merely serviceable. There is nothing too dull about them, even if the backgrounds are not as majestic as the characters believe they are. Those characters’ designs, however, are uncomfortable, with most of the wolves looking more like hybrids between m
The Howling
The slightly earlier Despicable Me may have shown that a predictable story isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the predictability of Alpha and Omega’s plot is what harms it. Most of that plot had even been shown in the trailers. Not only is the story predictable, it is disorientated, moving from one incident to the next without rhyme or reason, making the film feel unnatural.
Alpha and Omega may not be made by Dreamworks, rather Lionsgate [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it still lurks in that sad category with no intention of coming out. It is not the worst animated movie ever, far from it [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it doesn’t have anything the animation fan hasn’t seen before countless times.

Long and Panettiere are passable as the film’s leads, but it is a shame that they are not better developed. Their growing relationship is portrayed awkwardly, and the writers try too hard to make Humphrey humorous that he ends up being annoying. The comic relief characters – Humphrey’s fellow Omega friends, Marcel the goose (Larry Miller) and Paddy the duck (Eric Prince) – are even more irritating and overstay their welcome quickly. The best performances are Chris Carmack as Garth and Christina Ricci as Kate’s younger sister, who have a relationship that is more interesting than that of Kate and Humphrey.
2010 has been quite a decent year for animation, especially if Disney’s fantastic Princess and the Frog has a 2010 release (it was released that year in the UK). Toy Story 3 was great, Despicable Me was good, even Shrek Forever After was a fairly pleasant surprise. However, the problem with animated family films is, since most people think kids’ films need less effort, the majority of them are lacklustre, attempting to distract from their dire plot with fart jokes and talking animals; Dreamworks is a prime offender.
The worst thing about the story though is that it is just boring. It had potential, as wolves and their packs could have made an interesting subject for an animated film. Something on the level of Watership Down may be too much to ask, but more could have been done with these characters than the film that was released. The viewer is unlikely to care about Humphrey and Kate or their relationship, or even if the two packs are united, because the characters are not engaging. The jokes are not funny; they are either too simple [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like Garth’s bad howling leading to a joke that was done better in Shrek, or embarrassing, like Humphrey being hit between the legs, followed by him whinging like a household dog, and the wolves being mocked by caribou. The most amusing dialogue are the threats from Kate’s mother, and even that wears thin after a while.
Leader of the Pack
Humphrey the wolf (Justin Long) is in love with his childhood friend Kate (Hayden Panettiere), but a relationship between the two seems unlikely, considering that Humphrey is an Omega and Kate is an Alpha, and the latter finds herself being married to Garth (Chris Carmack) in order to unite his pack and her pack. Soon, Kate and Humphrey are taken by humans to a recreational area to repopulate it, but Kate plans to get home before chaos can ensue between her and Garth’s packs. She and Humphrey journey back to their park, getting to know each other better along the way.
