Stealing Beauty [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Besieged, and The Dreamers, released in 1996, 1999, and 2003, respectively, are all propelled by dramatic surface plots involving budding sexuality, politics, forbidden romance, and even a semi-incestuous relationship between siblings, but for many viewers, these films are really about Bertolucci’s essential love of art, specifically sculpture (in Stealing Beauty), music (in Besieged), and, of course, film (in The Dreamers).
Besieged, the least known of the trilogy, stars Thandie Newton as Shandurai, who is exiled to Italy after an African dictator jails her activist husband. In addition to going to medical school, she works as a live-in housecleaner for a British man, a piano teacher named Jason Kinsky (David Thewlis) whose apartment in Rome he inherited from a relative. Kinsky falls in love with Shandrai, and after she rebuffs him by telling him that she is married, develops a plan to win her affections, if not her heart.
Movies, no matter how dynamic or soulful, are rarely complex enough to be talked about in terms of subtext, and currently, the only form such a discussion takes, it seems, concerns the adult jokes embedded in some children’s animated films. All of this points to the unique excellence of three recent films directed by cinema legend Bernardo Bertolucci, which could be called his “art trilogy.”

That’s a lot of plot material, but at the core of the movie is the fact that the main friend of Lucy’s mother [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an Irishman (Donal McCann) who owns the villa, is a sculptor, and his life-size wood figures are almost everywhere in the house and on the grounds. Outside of the plot, there are many other aesthetic reasons to appreciate the movie: It’s intoxicating how the feminine viewpoint provided by Susan Minot’s screenplay, and the particularly masculine sensuality of Bertolucci’s images, work together, as if Venus and Mars are fusing as they collide. And though Liv Tyler is no Meryl Streep, she brings to this role a steady authenticity that anchors the film.
Sculpting A Life
Stealing Beauty is the story of an American teenager, Lucy Harmon (Liv Tyler), who comes to Italy, specifically to a villa in the Tuscan countryside, to visit a friend of her mother, and finds the villa packed with other guests who had known her mother. Her mother committed suicide sometime in the recent past, and had hinted to Lucy that her father, who Lucy has never met, was at one time a resident of the villa. Lucy is not only interested in uncovering the identity of her father [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but she’s also determined to lose her virginity to a boy she had met years earlier on another visit to the villa.
The Ultimate Soundtrack
It’s a beautiful story, though for Bertolucci that’s not enough. While it’s hardly a complete throwback to another era, much of the film is silent, and when it’s not, it’s often music (Kinsky’s playing of classical music on his piano, or jazz on his stereo, or African music from Shandurai’s portable player) instead of dialogue that the viewer hears. Nevertheless, it’s those motionless figures that seem to appear in almost every one of Bertolucci’s meticulously fashioned frames that dominate. Yes, it’s a bit trite to suggest that uncovering the identity of a father as well as exploring budding sexuality is like chipping away at a block of wood. But the sheer elegance of the moviemaking overpowers such a charge, turning potential shallowness into a deeply felt subtext.
