So who is pulling the purse strings? It should be no surprise in Shanghai that women are doing much of the buying. Figures show a large number of women now entering Shanghai tobacco shops, even if they’re not necessarily the ones lighting up. We need further developments to maintain the momentum, and to ensure that there is a continuing focus on disadvantaged groups. There are also of course other challenges for prevention notably alcohol and obesity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although these will require some different approaches and a judicious mix of carrots and sticks. But in a year when health issues have had so much attention, it is timely to draw attention to tobacco control action as true health reform, and a success story on the grand scale.
