In both of these two major battles mentioned above, Hannibal would surely have lost had he not been blessed with a military planning ability superior to perhaps any other commander in history, which allowed him tactical methods of dismantling superior units.
Hannibal was only a young man when he, backed by the Carthaginian congress, assumed control of the North African empire's military. He at first commanded ground forces held in Iberia, now present day Spain.
