Berlin's film captures the innocence of the children, the dedication of the teachers, and the isolation of their rural community as it becomes part of the world, part of history, and part of an unforgettable project that touches many lives. It is evocative of what some very special people are capable of creating with determination and creativity to honor victims of hatred. The transformation of a death car into a symbol of renewal, hope, and love is touching and tenderly captured by Berlin. A very good film to discuss history and intolerance with your children or grandchildren, with a wonderful musical score.
With beautiful cinematography of the peaceful Tennessee Valley, the film follows the development of the project. With paper clips from many famous people, from people of many parts of the nation, the project slowly grew. Some weeks, there were only two paper clips received. It started looking impossible, with an estimated ten years time necessary to collect enough paper clips to complete the project. So they decided to collect only enough to represent each of the children, an estimated 1.5 million children. Then Peter and Dagmar Schroeder showed up.
Then the individual stories poured in. People sent memorabilia along with the story about that person's life. Finally, even some actual survivors come and meet with the chldren. The problem of a place to store the milions of paper clips was presented; where could they keep the project's archives for other people to remember and honor the victim of hatred? The Schroeders helped the school to locate a railroad car that once took the Jewish people to the camps; it would now be coming to their school to complete their project.
Paper Clips Recalls the Magnitude of the Genocide of Jewish Victims in World War II
What happens when the students begin to learn about prejudice, hatred, and genocide? Before long, the project begins to take on a life of its own. The students do not stop at 6,000,000 paper clips but go on to reach for 11,000,000 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to show graphically the loss of life of all the victims of the Holocaust, including gypsies, minorities, homosexuals. And more memorabilia keeps coming in as people in other parts of the world join in the memorial that the students are creating.
They had a friend who was a Holocaust Survivor who learned about the project. They were journalists and wanted to participate. The children had never seen Germans, so isolated were they in their little valley. Their vision began to open up. Not only that [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the Schroeders sent someone from the Dayton Herald to report on the project, and before long, the children had amassed millions of paper clips from throughout the world. Before anyone could realize what was happening, their project appeared on the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. A landslide of paperclips rained in on the students [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], millions of them.
A small rural community, nearly all white and Christian, takes on an amazing project designed by a teacher to help her students realize there is a diverse world beyond their idyllic valley in Tennessee. When studying the Holocaust, they decide to save one paper clip for each Jew killed in the brutal ethnic assault from the Nazis.
