Why Do People Gossip?
We could look at the problem of gossip from any point of view, including and especially a spiritual one. The Bible states in Matthew 7:12 (NIV), “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” It also states in Matthew 12:36 (NIV), “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.” As a Christian, it should really hit home, and as a human being, it should just make sense. Whatever angle we look at it from, gossip has historically done a great deal of damage to people, families, businesses, churches, etc. It hurts personally, wrecks relationships,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tarnishes reputations and does absolutely no good and serves no purpose.
What Does the Bible Say About Gossip?
If we are going to live by example, and we should as adults and parents, we need to take our own advice. If we do not walk the walk and talk the talk, that is all we will be seen for….talk. Gossip is not only immoral and unkind; it is also extremely hurtful and damaging. Gossip is not necessarily about telling lies. It is spreading personal information,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether accurate or inaccurate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], usually for the wrong reasons.
As previously mentioned, some people simply have it in their nature and just enjoy doing it. There is not necessarily an evil plan nor are there cruel intentions involved. Bear in mind, however, that it does not make it any more acceptable. Some people do it out of insecurity or as an attention getter. There are others who do it with blatant and malicious motives. Whatever the reason, it must be identified and stopped. One seemingly innocent rumor can do a whole lot of damage. It is similar to a tornado in the way of once it gains momentum; it is out of control and cannot seem to be stopped.
We can prevent gossip by not getting involved in it. Guard ourselves closely and stop if we catch ourselves starting it. If we find ourselves in a situation where it is happening around us, we need to walk away from it immediately. We should not allow ourselves to get involved and fall into the trap. In truth, we may not always be able to prevent gossip, but we can ward it off once it has reared its ugly head. We can be strong advocates by standing up against it.
There may or may not be a purpose behind it, as some people seem to have it in their nature to let everyone know what is going on with everyone else. Facts then get twisted and rumors get started. Gossip and rumors may be true, but they are information which is simply wrong to repeat. Gossip is very easy to get caught up in, and we must be very careful to guard against the temptation.
How Can We Prevent Gossip?
We should protect ourselves if we are the victim and not be afraid to convey that we have been hurt by it. If we are a witness to it happening to someone else, we should do the same by standing up for them. Remind the perpetrators of the damage it can cause and that they would not want it done to them. Likely it will stop them dead in their tracks. Hopefully it will also cause them to walk away and think long and hard about it. Perhaps they will think twice before doing it again. It is a widespread issue, and we forgetful humans need to be reminded as much as possible.
