The Penan and some other Orang Ulu communities still regarded smoking as an accepted norms, part of their culture. The Orang Ulu smokes basically for two reasons; culture and to scare away mosquitoes when they go into the jungle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to Micheal Jok – who is an Orang Ulu hails from Long Bangan, Belaga.
He said it is considered rude if one is to tell the Orang Ulu smoking jakok is bad. In Punan (different from Penan) society, cheap marlboro lights gold packs with no tax, Sayang Kavang, president Punan National Association explained, smoking is already a deeply embedded culture – way of life. “We usually offering our guests smoke instead of drink, bury our departed loved ones – with lot of them, they are used in our traditional rituals of healing and almost everything we do daily” he said. Alex, who grew up with Penan and still maintaining regular contact with them candidly said that is particularly true of the Penan in Belaga district in particular and the Kayan in general.
“If you want to know what gift to bring when visiting a Penan longhouse? It’s cigarette,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” he candidly said. There are several major points in the ministry’s draft regulation which, when issued, would deal the biggest blow the local tobacco industry has ever received. First, tobacco products would be required to display information about their levels of tar. Second, wholesale marlboro cigarettes online, tobacco companies would be restricted in what substances they could put in their products.
Third, cigarette vending machines would be banned, as would selling cigarettes or tobacco to pregnant women and children. The selling of individual cigarettes would also be prohibited. Fourth, tobacco advertising,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], promotional activities and sponsorship would be banned, and graphic health warnings would have to be displayed on cigarette packets and words such as “mild” or “light,” which could mislead people into thinking the products were less harmful, removed.
Fifth, more smoke-free areas would be set up, including a total ban on smoking in public and indoor areas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including health centers, schools,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], playgrounds, places of worship, on public transportation and in office buildings. In answering the charge that smoking bans in public housing are unjust, the NEJM paper counters that the real injustice is to the nonsmokers in public housing. They, too, are poor and have few other housing options.
Why should they have to suffer from secondhand smoke? Some 7 million Americans live in public housing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and 40% are families with children. “This was the first peer-reviewed report discussing the rationale and explicit strategies for smokefree public housing,” says the NEJM’s paper’s lead author, Jonathan Winickoff, MPH ’01, a pediatrician at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children. “We have an opening here to protect millions of vulnerable individuals—children, elderly, and disabled, who are really quite susceptible to tobacco smoke.”
