For those who have read the book, comparing it to the movie is inevitable. And while it would be impossible to include every detail of the 500-page book in a two-and-a-half hour film,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Swedish film has managed to retain all of the vital details that made the book such a riveting read. Unfortunately, I’m not so confident the same will be said when the Hollywood version is released.
Salander ends up working as the sidekick to Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an embattled journalist who has taken leave from his job at investigative magazine Millennium. Blomkvist has recently been sentenced to three months jail after losing a court case where he was accused of libel by a powerful corporate titan. He is temporarily employed by 82- year-old Henrick Vanger, CEO of the Vanger companies, to solve the murder of his 16-year-old niece 50 years earlier.

Central Themes of the Film
Authentic Swedish flavor
The central themes that seemed to resonate with Larsson are carried throughout the movie including violence against women, the moral bankruptcy of big business and the potent strain of Nazism boiling and bubbling away underneath the beautiful surface of the Swedish landscape. Some of the scenes, especially those involving graphic violence and rape, are hard to watch, and at more than two-and-a- half hours, the movie can be a bit too much for some.
Artfully blending a hard-edged attitude with a certain vulnerability, the movie is darkly slick material. Rapace keeps the audience intrigued and wantin
In the film,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the core of the narrative is the punk-like brooding Lisbeth Salander and is played to absolute perfection by Swedish actress Noomi Rapace. The young protagonist is a diminutive computer hacker with multiple piercings, liberal tattoos, spiky hair, a loathing for authorities and an aggressive attitude towards those who threaten or hurt her. It’s all in the cold black-eyed stare,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the raging fury and hunger for revenge against anyone who has done her wrong.
Fans of Stig Larrson’s first instalment of the Millennium trilogy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, should go and see the Swedish-made, sub-titled film before Hollywood spoils it with its own version. The Hollywood take on the film currently in the works is in danger of, like so many other Americanized foreign films, losing the edge of the story.
Those who have seen Spoorloos which was remade into The Vanishing, Abres Los Ojos which was made into Vanilla Sky and A bout de Soufflé which was made into Breathless will understand the type of damage that turning a masterful foreign film into a US remake can do in translation. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will only be on Australian screens for a little while longer so movie goers still have a chance to see it before the story is goven a typical Hollywood sugar-coating.
Blomkvist is a genial character who provides a nice contrast to Salander. He looks pale, overworked and slightly blurred around the edges – like he could do with a long beach holiday. He shouldn’t be underestimated though. He is intellectually sharp and absolutely resolute when he puts his mind to something. Together he and Salander make a formidable team. With their respective skills they unearth a grisly series of murders and a disturbingly dysfunctional family history.
