Boone Hall Plantation
In 1818, Charles Henry formed Charles H. Drayton & Co. to continue phosphate-mining operations. A narrow gauge railroad, fifteen houses, and two stores were built to support the mining operations at Drayton Hall. Profits from mining the phosphate allowed the family to recover from the Civil War. The company continued operation into the early 1900s.
Upon purchasing the property [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], John Drayton began the construction of the rice fields. He knew that cultivating rice required more than just planting and harvesting. Dirt walls were needed to keep salt water out and ditches were dug and gates constructed to move fresh water in. At certain times of the year [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the rice fields were flooded and then the water needed to be drained back out. In addition, the rice had to be flailed, hulled and polished before it could be shipped out and sold.

Born in 1847, Charles Henry Drayton was only five years old when he inherited Drayton Hall. Until Charles Henry could assume full ownership, his father’s youngest brother [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], John, acted as steward. Prior to John moving to Texas at the end of the Civil War, he set up the first contracts to mine phosphate at Drayton Hall.

Members of the Drayton family have been involved in various professions over the centuries, including medicine and politics. However, Drayton Hall remains best known for its years as a rice plantation. A portion of the 18th century rice fields is still in existence on the property.
John Drayton was born in 1715 to Thomas and Ann Drayton. Thomas Drayton’s wealth was amassed primarily from cattle ranching. As the third son, John knew he would not inherit the family property; so in 1738, he purchased 350 acres to the south of his family home. He soon began construction on the house that is known as Drayton Hall. Rather than cattle ranching, John chose to go in a different direction. He made a transition from raising cattle to growing rice. Drayton Hall soon became a successful rice plantation and John Drayton a wealthy, influential man.

By the 1830s, family correspondence indicates that rice crops were poor and that the business of running a plantation was no longer a good one. The family began to look for other ways to revive their fortune.
