The New Herb Bible also states that Egyptians used aloe vera in embalming practices. It also states that Aristotle had Alexander the Great conquer the country of Socotra in which aloe vera was very commonly grown.

According to the New Herb Bible, aloe vera is formed in a “sprawling rosette with grayish/olive-green pointed, succulent leaves with cream teeth,” and when it blossoms it appears to have “yellow bell-shaped flowers” that appear in the shape of “candelabra”. However, some forms of aloe vera rarely blossom and reproduce in the form of new shoots. Aloe vera can grow to a maximum of three feet, though it does not grow rapidly. As it grows, the leaves of the plant tend to spread out into a wider area. The plant needs a lot of space to grow to its maximum height and spread.
Medicinal Functions of Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is mainly used as a quick remedy to heal burns. Some kitchens have a small aloe vera plant set up on the kitchen window seal [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in order to allow quick access in the event of a burn. To apply aloe to a burn, break off a small portion of the leaf (a larger portion if there is a larger burn). Then split open the leaf. Inside of the leaf is a gel-like substance. Rub the gel on the burn. There should be immediate relief. Although aloe can help relieve minor burns, it should never replace emergency help that is needed by large, serious burns.

Common aloe vera is known in Latin as alo barbadensis. There are over 300 different species of aloe vera. It is native to dry climates, and thus requires very little water. In fact, aloe vera is a very hardy plant. It does well in most climates as long as it does not get left outside when the temperatures drop below 32ºF and as long as it does not get too much water. If the plant is getting too much water or sun the leaves will start to soften and become a faded green color.
Aloe vera juice is also available at natural health foods stores and pharmacies. However, it has a very strong laxative effect and should never be used by children. The juice can be used by those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), indigestion, gas, and gastric ulcers. It should not be ingested by those who are currently pregnant or by those who may become pregnant. Laxative products are not recommended for pregnant women because it adds further stress to the unborn child.
