Many people have said that Monster House is not a film for children. Funnily enough, no kids had to be taken out of the screening I attended. In fact, the only incident that really shocked and horrified the mainly preteen audience was a . . . (wait for it) . . . KISSING scene! Oh the humanity.
Does Monster House entertain its target audience: kids who like being scared? You bet your large popcorn with butter-flavoured sludge. Yeah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are a couple of plot holes (for instance: how does a 12-year-old learn how to use an earth mover so fast?). And yeah, Spielberg plays with your emotions like Pagannini on a Stradivarius. But when he does it so well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who really cares? A solid 8/10.
Forget the director's name (Gil Kenan, for those of you who are keeping score). This is a Steven Spielberg flick right down to its very bones. And if you've ever seen flicks like or Jaws, you know how it all works.

Trailers with Monster House include Meet the Robinsons, A Night at the Museum, Flushed Away, Zoom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Open Season.
A gang of mis-matched kids realize the house is an evil monster (we know it's evil because it eats a puppy. Eating adults are one thing, but a puppy!). Anyway, the clueless grownups don't believe the kids, the monster house chomps the clueless grownups in inventive ways, and the kids must figure out how to destroy it. We've seen it all before: the trick is seeing how Spielberg and Kenan take these familiar elements and work with them. And Spielberg is a past master at telling this kind of story.
Monster House was animated using Motion Capture technology, the same process that Spielberg and Zemekis used for 2004's Polar Express. This time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they've grafted it to a much stronger script. The MOCAP process isn't perfect (everyone's hair looks Superglued) but the facial expressions are very well done. And while the titular house won't give Disney animators sleepless nights, it makes for a very effective villain.
There's that one house in every neighborhood. The one the kids won't go near. The one with the scary old man (Steve Buscemi) who tells everyone off for walking on his lawn, and steals their toys. But this house is different. Twelve-year-old DJ (Mitchell Musso) thinks this house is alive. And it's hungry.
