"We are trying to get a full stop-motion version of Gris Grimly’s Pinocchio off the ground, with the Jim Henson Company," Del Toro told Bloody-Disgusting on November 12th. "The idea came from Gris, and everybody loves his book about it."
Due to his duties on the pair of upcoming live-action films based on The Hobbit – he's directing the films as well as co-writing the script with Lord of the Rings screenwriters Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens – Del Toro will not direct this version of Pinocchio. Instead, he will executive produce the film, and write the script with Gris Grimley. Grimley will co-direct the film with Adam Parrish King (The Wraith of Cobble Hill).
"It's not coming to a screen near you any time soon," Del Toro says about Pinocchio. "Even if it were to begin today, it would be about three years in the making, but we are working to make it happen. A full-scale puppet universe takes time."

Carlos Collodi first published The Adventures of Pinocchio in 1883. In the vein of darker, more cautionary fairy tales from the likes of Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, it featured multiple deaths, including the title character accidentally killing The Talking Cricket, which later served as the model for Jiminy Cricket in the Disney movie.
According to Variety, the director/producer (Labyrinth [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hellboy II: The Golden Army) is working with The Jim Henson Company in order to develop the flick. Siblings Brian and Lisa Henson are producing the flick, along with Henson Company vice-president Jason Lust.
With Grimley's involvement in the film [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it goes without saying that this Pinocchio will be far darker than the 1940 animated movie produced by Walt Disney. Grimley illustrated a 2002 version of the classic tale [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that showed his artistic debt to such writers as Edgar Allan Poe, Edward Gorey, and H.P. Lovecraft.
"The original story is far more perverse and spooky and (has a) semi-necrophilia vibe to it in certain aspects," Del Toro said. "Gris certainly has that vein in him, he wants to do this with that original spookiness in it, we are trying to get it going. The Jim Henson Company is behind it and we are currently working on the screenplay!"
