The Plot of Surrogates Sounds Good on Paper, But Something Was Lost in the Translation
So what happened?
Director Johnathan Mostow (Breakdown, U-571, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) has yet to establish himself amongst the elite in his field. Both Breakdown and U-571 showed promise, but something prevents Mostow and his films from reaching the upper echelon. With Surrogates, he once again fails to achieve greatness. Instead, Mostow serves up some dull and unimaginative science fiction.
Surrogates stars Bruce Willis (Die Hard, Color of Night, The Expendables) as FBI Agent Tom Greer. The year is 2017, and Tom lives in a society without community. People confine themselves to their homes, living their lives through robot lookalikes called "surrogates." The robots have no sentience of their own; rather, if their owners think it,Jordan Retro 10, the robots do it. It is a world without much crime but also without much connection.

90s Forgotten & Underrated Science Fiction Films
Last Decade's Underrated Science Fiction Films
Where the science fiction sporadically blends with action, the thrills are unoriginal and not so thrilling. The robot chasing the human scenes are far outclassed by Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and the human chasing robot scenes are equally outclassed by I, Robot. Where protagonists and antagonists have superhuman capabilities, the action surrounding their conflicts needs to be equally superhuman. Surrogates' action, however, is dreadfully human.
Surrogates, released in theaters on September 25, 2009, had potential. Combining some of the better aspects of Gamer, I, Robot, and The Final Cut in concept, Surrogates falls short on delivery. Having squandered its limitless potential, the resulting movie accomplishes little in the way of social commentary and is, at best, an average science fiction film.
Too much of Surrogates focuses on Tom's relationship with his estranged wife, Maggie. Though important in showing the disconnect living a life devoid of real human contact would have on society, the coinciding drama of this relationship slows the movie down, sometimes grinding it to a halt. Moreover, viewers are bombarded with the repetitive social construct, which is far more simplistic than Mostow apparently thinks or gives viewers the credit to likewise understand.
Surrog
That is, until someone develops away to murder surrogate owners by electro-shocking their robots. The son of Dr. Lionel Canter (James Cromwell), inventor of surrogates, is murdered in this way. Tom, together with his partner Jennifer Peters (Radha Mitchell), must find out how and why. Add to the mix a zealous, anti-surrogate rabble rouser (Ving Rhames), a corrupt corporation that will stop at nothing to protect its secrets, and a surrogate-dependent wife (Rosamund Pike), and Surrogates has the makings of a semi-decent science fiction blockbuster of I, Robot proportions.
The acting by all, and particularly that of Willis, Pike (Die Another Day, Pride & Prejudice, Fracture), Cromwell (Babe,Air Jordan 23 XX3 Shoes, The General's Daughter, I,New Jordans 2010, Robot) and Rhames (Pulp Fiction,Air Jordan 16.5 Team, Mission: Impossible, The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard), is both convincing and finely delivered. Conversely, the script the cast must work with is downright boring, and the dialogue, though not terrible, is uninspiring.
Lackluster Writing, Weak Action, and Slow Pace Take Their Toll on Surrogates' Quality Concept
